Project overview
In a conceptual exercise, aimed to target everyday climbers, my team and I were asked to design a climbing platform for REI. This space was meant to provide useful information to climbers, every single day.
Our goal?
To, not only design an app that was useful, usable and desirable, but also to create a product with the potential to deliver significant business goals.
The outcome?
A mobile app that incorporates REI’s existing features for climbers but allows them to:
Access daily route conditions
Find climbing partners and communities
Stay informed about events near them
Experience structured and personalised learning paths
Uncovering the Problem
What did we discover?
The Opportunity
My design process focused on addressing climbers' needs for community, resources, and expert guidance. I asked myself, how we might create connections between climbers and provide a one-stop solution for all climbing needs? This led to the conceptualization of key app features like partner matching and comprehensive climbing resources.
3- week sprint constraint: Narrowing our focus to the 'Find a Partner' Feature
Given the constraints of a 3-week sprint, our conceptual focus narrowed to the 'Find a Partner' feature. We envisioned a system that allows climbers to find partners based on experience level, schedule overlap, and shared interests.
Testing and Refinement
Our journey in developing the mid-fidelity prototype of the REI Climbing Companion App's 'Find a Partner' feature was significantly enriched by our usability testing process. This phase was crucial in fine-tuning our design to meet user needs effectively.
Climbing partners and home screen confusion:
Users experienced confusion with the 'Improve' option in navigation and wondered who the partners listed on the home screen where. We simplified these elements for better user comprehension.
Gender Preference:
Feedback indicated a desire for a 'No Preference' option in gender selection. These insights will guide us to enhance clarity and inclusivity in these features.
Building trust in matched partners:
Users were unclear about what “certified” mean. Safety was a big pain point in our research so building trust between climbers was essential. We made some serious changes to the profile section including, safety certifications, amount of climbs, favorite spots to climb or gyms for easy matching, and previous climbs they’ve completed in order to build trust.
The summit is a lovely place!
Integrating REI's Existing Features: All-in-One Access
As part of our ongoing enhancements to the REI Climbing Companion App, we are focused on integrating existing REI services to create a more unified and user-friendly experience. Our goal is to transform the app into an all-encompassing hub for climbers. Key integrations include:
Next Steps: Envisioning the Future of the REI Climbing Companion App
As we envision the future of the REI Climbing Companion App, our conceptual roadmap includes innovative features that could significantly enhance the climbing experience. These ideas, while currently hypothetical, represent our commitment to pushing the boundaries of user-centered design in the outdoor adventure space.
